Chavez Urges Obama to
Respect Latin America
Caracas - Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez
urged on Tuesday US
President Barack Obama
to respect democracies
and processes of change
in Latin America and the
Third World.
In a meeting with
followers in the city of
Barcelona, 198 miles
southeast of Caracas,
Chavez urged people
present to not build
their hopes up on the
new US government.
"This is the American
Empire, anyway," he
said, recalling remarks
made recently by
Brazilian President Luiz
Inacio Lula Da Silva,
who urged Obama to see
Latin America with
different eyes.
We say hello to the
people of the United
States of America. We
are happy that this
president, who filled
the world with terror
and violence, is gone:
Bye, bye Mister (George
W.) Bush, said Chavez.
I wish for the coming to
power of Obama to mark a
change in US relations
with the Third World
based on respect of
sovereignty, he added.
President Chavez
announced at the
gathering that as of
Thursday, he will start
writing a column to be
published Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Sundays on
national press and
Internet.
