Bogota - The president
of the Colombian
Episcopal Conference,
Cardenal Pedro Pubiano
affirmed this Monday
that the Catholic Church
supports a humanitarian
agreement and a
negotiated peace, but
with Justice and without
impunity.
At the opening ceremony
of the conference and
making clear emphasis on
the peace process
followed by the
government with the
paramilitary groups,
Pubiano assured
negotiations should be
completed without
infringing the State of
Law and the fundamental
rights in the context of
truth, justice and
reparation to the
victims.
The president of the
Episcopal Conference
called the government
and the Colombia
Revolutionary Arm Forces
(FARC) to negotiate an
humanitarian agreement
that will permit the
release of the prisoners
as soon as possible.
If the humanitarian
agreement is being
negotiated it should
serve as an instrument
to increase the level of
trust between the
executive and the
insurgency, as well as
to feed the hope to
achieve peace in
Colombia.
FARC Central General
Staff Secretariat
reiterated their
intention to make the
prisoners exchange. For
that reason they urged
the Colombian
administration to
appoint a negotiating
group, which was formed
on May 2003 under the
leadership of commander
Raul Reyes and currently
imprisoned guerrilla
leader Simon Trinidad,
among others.
