Costa Rica Free of Swine Flu, 21 Suspected Cases Negative

Some 21 cases of swine flu have been reported and investigated by health officials, according to the ministra de Salud, María Luisa Ávila, and in all 21 cases the laboratory results done by Inceinsa have been negative. One of the cases involved a Mexican tourist staying at a downtown San Jose hospital.

However, health officials are taking a break, as they continue their prevention measures and prepare in the case of an outbreak.

Eduardo Doryan Garrón, president of the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) - social security - confirmed that all medical directors at public hospitals and clinics have received protocols for daily reports of cases and updates.

"The CCSS is in the process of purchasing fifteen mobile units that measure temperature and will be placed at strategic entry points to the country (airports and land border points), in co-ordination with immigration officials, which will allow, in seconds, to measure temperature without person to person contact", said Doryan,

The CCSS head explained that any person testing a temperature over 38 Celsius will be subject to screening, which includes isolating the person and beginning the process of detecting symptoms of the swine flu infection or if they are suffering other ailment.

Doryan added that the CCSS is also in the process of purchasing protective suits to increase the current supply, that can be used in containment situations and family visits.

In addition, the Fundación Omar Dengo will be spreading the message to 450.000 children to bring home the message of prevention to their parents.

The CCSS has also set up a website http://influenza.ccss.sa.cr/  to inform the public.
