Former
President Calderón To Formalize Today His
Presidential Aspirations
Former Costa Rican president, Rafael Ángel
Calderón, is expected to formally submit his
name for the candidacy of the Partido Unidad
Social Cristiana (PUSC) party presidential
nomination. Calderón, who was president
between 1990 and 1994, is currently on trial
for corruption and embezzlement.
There is no doubt that Calderón has his eyes
set on the presidential chair for the 2010
elections and the PUSC party has been
waiting on his registration, with no other
candidate making their wishes public until
Calderón makes his move first.
Last week it was hinted that Jose Miguel
Echandi, Costa Rica's former ombudsman, may
be the party's Plan B. Echandi discarded the
idea, saying he has not made any decision if
would run or not and that the rumours were
just that.
Calderón is betting that he will be
vindicated, that the trial that is dragging
on and on, will find him innocent of all
charges, paving the way for his re-election.
Earlier this month the former president had
made it clear that he would seek the party
nomination no matter of the progress of the
trial or its outcome.
In an interview with the daily Spanish
language newspaper, Diario Extra, Calderón
said the trial should be over in three or
four months and there is no doubt he will be
found not guilty and that he is the person
to bring life back to the party, a party
that took turns with the PLN governing the
country for decades, and now is in shambles.
