Thursday, Friday and Saturday Legal Holidays
Although Semana Santa officially begins
today, the only legal holidays are Good
Thursday, Good Friday and this year
Saturday, April 11, in celebration of Costa
Rica's national hero, Juan Santamaría.
Anyone who is required to work on these
three days will have to be paid double their
normal pay for the day or days worked.
Although many businesses and the central
government are closed all week beginning on
Monday, the first three days of Semana Santa
are not legal holidays and employers can
deduct the days from vacation periods.
Banks will be open Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday, closing their doors until the
following Monday. Supermarkets will
have special hours for Friday and all major
shopping centres will be closed on Friday as
well.
There is limited or no bus service on many
routes on Friday.
