Geriatric Hospital At Full Capacity. And
Then Some As Families Abandon Their Elderly
Although Semana Santa is a time to spend
with family and friends, a growing trend has
the staff at the Hospital Raúl Blanco
Cervantes concerned, as many leave their
elderly family members at the geriatric
hospital, using excuses of illnesses to keep
them at the hospital the entire week.
Fernando Morales, the head of the hospital
said that during Semana Santa the hospital
is overpopulated, this year exceeding the
maximum number of 400 bed patients.
Morales said that they have a number of
temporary beds for last minute patients
being dropped off by their families.
Making matters worse for the hospital is
having to care for a number of patients who
are ready for discharge but have nowhere to
go until after Semana Santa.
Dr. Morales said there are 12 such patients,
which if released would relieve pressure on
the hospital's resources.
Dr. Morales assures that these patients are
well enough to go home, their doctors have
given them the discharge, however, at the
request of the families, they are being kept
at the hospital for another week.
"There are many families concerned about
their elders, however, there are just as
many who abandon their elder family members,
in a clear violation of their rights", said
Dr. Morales.
