Locomotives For The
San José - Heredia To Arrive Tomorrow
The four locomotives that will be providing
regular commuter service between San José
and Heredia are expected to arrive at the
port of Limón tomorrow, ending their
transatlantic trip from Spain.
The locomotives are already painted with the
Incofer - Costa Rican railway - logo and
should be in operation within 20 days, says
the head of the Instituto Costarricense de
Ferrocarriles (Incofer), Miguel Carabaguíaz.
Each locomotive costs about 500.000 Euros or
us$665.000 and will be used to run the 12
kilometre of tracks between the Ciudad de
las Flores (Heredia) and the Atlántico train
station in San José.
The stops along the route include Santa Rosa
de Santo Domingo, Cuatro Reinas and Cinco
Esquinas, in Tibás.
Carabaguíaz explained that the locomotives
will be offloaded on Monday, then make the
trip on special transport equipment to San
José to be retrofitted to run on Costa
Rica's railway, which is different than the
European rails, in a process that could take
up to two weeks.
The San José-Heredia service should cost
about ¢355 colones each, the Autoridad
Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos
expected to set that rate on Monday April
13.
The San José-Heredia will operate similar to
the San Pedro - San José - Pavas commuter
train service.
