Semana Santa Exodus Begins
Semana Santa or Holy Week is a religious
affair for many Costa Ricans, attending
church and taking part in processions and
religious activities. But, for many more
Costa Ricans it is a time off work to head
for the beaches, mountains and resorts
around the country.
And although the legal holidays are Thursday
(April 9) and Friday (April 10), many will
take their vacation time, while others are
taking advantage of the close of business by
many companies and the closure of the
central government.
Yesterday morning many of the bus stations
serving the beach, mountain and rural areas
were jammed packed with travellers, beating
out the rush that is expected to begin
today.
Bus operators say that this year they will
be able to meet the demand, adding more
vehicles and more frequency of service on
all their routes.
The North and Central Pacific beaches are
popular destinations. Beaches like Jaco and
Manuel Antonio and Tamarindo and Playas del
Coco are favourites by Ticos.
Whatever the choice of destination, the
Policia de Transito will be on hand to
ensure safe travelling and ready to sanction
severely drunk drivers and speedsters. This
year the Transito will focus on bus drivers,
including placing undercover agents riding
some routes.
Back to work is on Monday.
