The Instituto del Café
de Costa Rica (Icafé)
estimates that coffee
growers will be looking
to employ some 200.000
people to harvest the
2.376900 "fanegas" (sacs
of 46 kg) expected for
this season.
The majority of the
coffee pickers are
expected to come from
the northren neighbour
of Nicaragua which are
accustomed to take
advantage of steady
season work picking
coffee in Costa Rica.
However, coffee pickers
are expected to come
from all over Central
America.
The coffee picking
season has alrady begun
in the areas of
Turrialba, Coto Brus and
Pérez Zeledón, high
altitude areas where the
coffee beans mature
earlier, and then move
to the the Central
Valley, Orosi, Tres Rios
and Los Santos.
The coffee harvest in
the lower lying areas
begins in November.
