The land of some of the Costa Rican forests now defined as “virgin” were actually used by Indians to grow corn, as far back as 5,000 years ago.

U.S. researcher Sally Horn explained that scientific evidence hints that the forest returned to these tilled lands after the Indians were displaced by the Spaniards.
