"I Have Never Lied"
President Arias Affirms
"I never lied to the
Costa Rican people; I
have ever lied in my
lie, I have many faults,
but one fault I have
never had is to lie",
Costa Rican president,
Óscar Arias Sánchez,
said while receiving the
independence torch in
Cartago last night.
The president stressed
that now is a time for
all Costa Ricans to
reconcile their
diffeence and took the
opportunity to remind
Costa Ricans that the
coming months will be
difficult.
Arias is being accused
of lying to the people
and of cover up over the
purchase of bonds by the
Chinese, which occurred
last January, but the
details only came to
light after Arias and
his government was
pressured by the press
to explain the details
of the deal.
The president said that
it serves no purpose to
criticize his
government, adding that
the government needs
critics, but it needs
more people who are
willing to collaborate.
"These are difficult
times and we cannot
waste time in useless
discussions. In the
coming months we will
see if we employ our
talents to build or to
destroy", said Arias.
Arias avoided any
comments referring to
the bonds "scandal" that
saw the government of
China purchase us$300
million dolalrs - in two
instalmens - of Costa
Rican bonds at 2%
interest rate and the
mishandling of the us$2
million dollars donated
by the government of
Taiwan, that was
destined to build
housing for the poor.
