Morgue Operating Without
Permit
Unbelievable, but true -
the Complejo Forense del
Organismo de
Investigación Judicial
(morgue) located in San
Joaquín de Flores, that
opened its doors almost
a decade ago, does not
have a "permiso de
funcionamiento del
Ministerio de Salud" - a
permit to operate.
The news was made public
in an exclusive report
by local television
channel 42, Extra
Noticias.
However, the forensic
centre will not have its
doors shut like many
businesses who in the
same situation,
notwithstanding that
there is a Ministerio de
Salud (health ministry)
order to correct a
number items that affect
the health of the
workers in the medical
centre, who have to
constantly bear the
smell of cadavers due to
a faulty ventilation
system.
A Salud report states
poor conditions of the
autopsy rooms and
handling waste as
garbage.
The Área de Salud de
Belén/ Flores gave the
forensic centre a month
to make the necessary
changes. The notice
expired on May 17, 2006
and more than a year
later, the same working
conditions exist that
place the health of the
workers at risk.
The ministra de Salud,
María Luisa Ávila,
confirms that the Salud
order has not been
complied with, saying
that Dr. Virginia
Céspedes has been
working on a remedial
plan due to the fact
that the forensic centre
cannot be shut down as
it is required to
perform autopsies daily.
Minister Avila said that
a commission has been
working on the problem
and bettering the
working conditions for
the employees, whose
major complaint is the
smell of Formaldehyde.
