MOPT Suggests Removal
Of Jail Penalty In New
Traffic Law
Officials of the
Ministerio de Obras
Públicas y Transportes (MOPT)
has drafted a series of
"suggestions" for
legislators for them to
consider in discussing
the new Ley de Tránsito
(traffic law).
Karla González, MOPT
minister, assures that
the majority of the
suggestions deal with
fines and jail sentences
included in the proposed
law.
González said that the
suggestions include
legislators exclude jail
time in the traffic code
and include it in the
Código Penal (Penal
Code).
The new traffic law
proposed by the MOPT
would include
exclusively
administrative sanctions
with fines of ¢230.000
and up for infractions.
The new traffic law
would also establish a
point system that would
end in a driver losing
his or her license for
bad driving.
The original proposal
included heavy fines and
jail sentences of up to
15 years for careless
and drunk driving. The
MOPT suggestion is to
transfer the jail
penalty to the penal
code.
The objective of the
MOPT is get the new
traffic law moving
quickly through the
legislative process by
removing items that have
been a stumbling block
since the introduction
of the bill almost two
years ago. |
