National Emergency
Declared For Northern
Zone
Los Chiles in the
northern zone of the
country has been hit
with a drought that has
left hundreds of animals
dead and threatening the
health and livelihood of
thousands of area
residents. Yesterday,
the government issued a
national emergency for
the area, a move that
allows resources to be
directed to the affected
area.
The announcement was
made official by the
ministro de la
Presidencia, Rodrigo
Arias and the ministro
de Agricultura y
Ganadería, Javier
Flores,who signed the
document that will see
¢150 million colones
sent to the area to get
fresh water to the
northern communities and
help with livestock
feed.
A government entourage
visited the areas of Lo
Chiles, Guatuso, Upala
and San Carlos, the
areas most affected by
the drought.
The national emergency
declaration involves
immediate and concrete
action to end the
crisis.
The Ministro de
Agricultura y Ganadería
is recommending that the
dead animals be buries
as soon as possible to
avoid spreading desease.
Companies like Tico
Fruit has agreed to
donate waste from
pineapples and Dos Pinos
offered to get water to
the farms.
The president of the
Instituto Costarricense
de Acueductos y
Alcantarillados, Ricardo
Sancho, said tht this
weekend they will double
the water tanker trucks,
doubling the current
90.000 litres of water
that is distributed
daily to the area.
The heat was so bad in
Los Chiles that the
ministers took along
water bottles to cool
off.
