Colombian Organizations
to FARC: Release
Prisoners
At least five Colombian
human rights
organizations requested
the guerrilla to release
all people held as a
gesture of national
reconciliation.
In a letter addressed to
top commander of FARC
(the Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia),
Alfonso Cano, the
organizations suggest
this to occur by July
20, when a national
march for the release of
people held by the
guerrillas will be
staged.
Ivan Cepeda, a leader of
MOVICE (the State Crime
Victims Movement), said
to hope this call will
be answered positively.
Promoters of the
initiative said a
unilateral release of
these people by FARC
would generate a
national atmosphere
conducive to a peaceful
solution of internal
armed conflict.
They also rejected the
position of sectors
which, in the wake of
the operation Jaque
success, tend to favour
war as a means to
achieve peace in the
country.
They insisted that any
solution must include
dialogue and agreement
and consider that recent
release of 15 people,
including former
presidential candidate
Ingrid Betancourt, opens
a window of FARC/Government
rapprochement for a
peace agenda.
