Panamanians Recovering

Nearly 7,389 low-income
Panamanians have
received ophthalmologic
surgery in the first
semester of this year,
as part of the Operation
Miracle program,
authorities from the
Health Ministry
reported.
According to official
data published by El
Siglo newspaper Tuesday,
about 4,688 patients had
pterygium syndrome and
2,699 suffered from
cataracts.
Those operations were
carried out by Cuban
physicians in the "Omar
Torrijos Herrera"
Ophthalmologic Center of
the "Luis Chicho Fabrega"
Hospital in the city of
Santiago, central
province of Veraguas.
The program is being
implemented by First
Lady Vivian Fernandez de
Torrijos, in
coordination with the
Cuban government and the
Health Ministry, the
daily stated.
The aim is to reduce eye
diseases that affect
Panamanians with low
economic resources.
