Tránsito To Increase Vigilance As the End Of "Summer Vacation" Nears
The Policía de Tránsito (traffic police) have identified eight distinct locations where there will be increased patrols and vigilance of traffic with the object of caring for tourists visiting the beaches and resorts during the last weeks of before going back to school.

The routes Manolo’s - río Lagarto (Alajuela - Guanacaste), Esparza - Orotina ( Puntarenas and Alajuela), Orotina - Quepos (Alajuela and Puntarenas), río Lagarto - Liberia and the bridge La Amistad (Guanacaste), La República - Río Frío (San José and Limón), Cartago - La Georgina (San José - Cartago), La Georgina - Paso Canoas (Cartago - Puntarenas) will all be under the keen eye of some 150 Tránsito officials.

The main objective is to control drinking and driving as well as reckless driving as drivers speed through populated areas and imprudent passing of other vehicles.

A concern of Tránsito officials will also be overloading vehicles with too many passengers. The vehicle's circulation permit identifies the number of passengers of the vehicle and that each passenger has a seat belt.

"The verification that vehicles have their paperwork in order, are in good mechanical and electrical condition is part of the preventive work of the officials", said Karla González, ministra de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT).

The minister cites the strong traffic police presence in Palmares as the control of drunk drivers resulted in many walking home and more important, the minister noted, there were no traffic accident deaths recorded during the 12 day event.
