International Drivers Licenses Not Valid, Nor Required in Costa Rica
Tránsito authorities are suspicious of the international drivers licenses being used by drivers in Costa Rica, suspecting that many of the documents are false and that many visitors are being duped into buying the documents, when in fact they are not required t drive in Costa Rica.

According to specialists, the documents, like that confiscated from a Colombian by the Policía de Tránsito, is not valid in Costa Rica. The Colombian had just recently arrived in Costa Rica and was found driving with the false document.

International drivers licenses are not required in Costa Rica. Any visitor with a foreign drivers license can drive in Costa Rica with their current license during their "visitor" status period.

Americans, Canadians and Europeans, for example, are allowed a 90 day visitor status and can drive with their "home" drivers license during the period. Other nationals, like South Americans, for example, are only allowed a 30 day visitor stay.

If the foreigner wants to continue driving in Costa Rica after their visitor period ends, they can obtain a Costa Rican drivers license from the Ministerio de Obras Pública y Transporte (MOPT) by visiting the nearest licensing office, paying the fee and submitting a copy of their passport and foreign drivers license. This must be done during their visitor period and not after.

The Policía de Tránsito believes that the international drivers licenses are being falsified and are being sold at the border crossings into Costa Rica, making tourists beleive that they will need the document to drive in Costa Rica.

International drivers licenses can also be obtained on many different internet websites. Again, such documents are not required in Costa Rica nor are they valid.

International drivers license documents like the above are not valid nor required in Costa Rica.
