Tránsito Intensifies Operations For Back To School on Monday
School starts on Monday and the frenzy shopping for school supplies and uniforms will be the norm at all retailers across the country, as parents ready their children for the return to classes.

Getting ready for the back to school is the Policía de Tránsito (traffic police) as it puts on guard all its 850 Tránsito officials to ensure a smooth and safe return to classes.

The vice-minister of Transportes, Viviana Martín, says that 800 officials are of the Policía de Tránsito and 50 will be "ad honórem" from the Transportes ministry.

Martín added that 150 schools that are located near major highways and high traffic streets there will be more intensive traffic controls.

The Policía de Tránsito will also be keeping a close and watchful eye on all school public transportation vehicles to ensure they comply with safety regulations issued by the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT).

Included in those regulations are the requirement of the driver to have a valid B3 license, each seat in the vehicle to have a safety belt and each school bus to have an assistant to help the driver with discipline of the school children.

According to the the vice-minister, there are some 500 school bus operators who do not comply with the regulations, of which 100 have already been notified by the MOPT. In total, the vice-minister said, that there are 1.015 school buses with permits and complying to all the regulations.

In addition to the Policía de Tránsito on watch and Fuerza Pública (police) patrols and school security, the MOPT will be issuing 15.000 reflective devices to children to wear to avoid being hit by a vehicle.
