Guatemala Congress
Permanent Commission
will convene a special
session to postpone the
state of calamity in
several municipalities
after last October's
damages and flooding,
caused by the rain,
still remain.
The National Coordinator
for Reduction of
Disaster (CONRED) made
the demand aimed at
providing aid to the
population affected by
the tropical storm
number 16 of the last
cyclone season.
The storm seriously
damaged houses, harvest
and communication lines
in 27 municipalities of
northeastern Guatemala
where dozens of families
are still living in
shelters, while lost all
possessions.
According to the
Constitution the
Parliament is the only
one with authority to
postpone, modify or
reject the state of
calamity in the national
territory.
Because the term to take
a decision in this
respect will expire by
the end of December, in
full recess for the New
Year's Eve CONRED asked
to call the full meeting
in the next few days to
avoid a critical
situation of the
victims. |
