Buses Waiting Cross Town
Service Approval
Although the concession
for the "rutas
intersectoriales" (the
cross town bus routes)
has yet to be handed
out, someone has the
inside information, as
one bus operator already
has his buses bought and
parked, waiting out the
awarding of the
concession.
The yellow buses that
will be used in the new
service are parked in a
lot in La Uruca.
Avelino Fallas,
president of Rentabus,
has already bought his
buses and has then
parked waiting. Fallas
said he bought his buses
from China and easy on
the environment,
offering comfort for the
passengers and less
contamination.
Fallas is banking that
his gasoline run buses
will be favoured over
other operators who use
diesel and are not as
environmentally clean.
The rutas
intersectoriales service
is aimed at reducing the
number of buses who now
have to go into San José
to drop off passengers
for them to mount
another bus to their
final destination. AN
example is the
neighouring communties
of Alajuelita and Escacú.
Passengers from Escazú
have to go to San José
to catch the Alajuelita
bus and vice versa. The
new service would
eliminate the one
transfer and two buses
from entering congested
downtown San José.
However, the new service
has critics, one of the
taxi operators.
Taxis is objecting to
the rush transit
authorities have had to
start the new service
and the process in
handing out concessions.
Gilberth Ureña,
spokesperson for the
Foro Nacional de
Taxistas (taxi union)
said that no real study
was made of the need for
the service and the rush
by the Consejo de
Transporte Público (CTP)
to issue more taxi
plates.
