Security Vice-Minister
Quits
The ministro de
Seguridad Pública has
suffered another hit,
the second in less than
two weeks, as
vice-minister, Rafael
Gutiérrez, called it
quits.
Two weeks ago, Fernando
Berrocal, left the post
following a disagreement
between himself and
Costa Rican president,
Oscar Arias, over the
handling of the news of
Colombian rebel group
members having ties to
Costa Rican politicians.
The Gutiérrez' decision
was made public on
Saturday who said that
after four decades of
public service he is
stepping down on May 1.
Laura Chinchilla,
vice-president and
interim security
minister made the
announcement, denying
rumours that the
Gutiérrez departure is
to the appointment of
Janinna del Vechio as
security minister.
Gutiérrez, by way of
government press office
said he would be making
a statement on Tuesday
after returning to San
José, spending the long
weekend with his family.
Rumours at the beginning
of last week that
viceministro Gerardo
Lascarez would also be
leaving his post were
quiet when the
vice-minister said
publicly that he reached
an agreement with the
incoming minister to
stay on a little longer,
though he would not say
how long.
Del Vecchio is expected
to assume her post on
