Former Security Minister
Says Berrocal Departure
Was Political Move To
Help Laura
The outspoken former
ministro de Seguridad,
Juan Diego Castro, said
yesterday that the
charge of Security
minister is one of the
most difficult and very
few last out their term.
Castro added that in the
case of Berrocal, he did
not have necessary
support of the
government to face the
Colombian rebel
situation as he did with
the fight agasint drugs.
The former minister said
that it was no surprise
and a known fact that
Berrocal would leave his
post and that Laura
Chinchilla would take
over, even if for a only
a short time, until she
announced her
presidential candidacy
for the 2010 elections.
Castro explained that
the Berrocal departure
was planned for some
time to give room for
Laura to have image
catapulted from the
Ministerio de Seguridad,
who has hed her sights
on the 2010 elections.
The former minister
praised the work of
Berrocal, especially in
the fight against drug
trafficking, saying that
the work was excellent,
especially in the area
of coordinating the
different authorities of
the region and the
world. However, in other
areas, the minister did
not have the support of
his fellow cabinet
ministers.
Castro added that the
excuse of Berrocal
stepping down so as not
to appear before the
Legislative Assembly was
just that, an excuse,
well timed, to allow for
public opinion to build
in favour of Laura
before she announces her
candidacy to the
presidential chair.
Castro is behind the
current awareness
campaign "Recuperemos la
Paz" (recovering peace)
that is urging citizens
to pressure the
government, the courts
and legislators to pass
tough laws to curb the
rise in crime.
"Vivimos bajo la ley del
hampa" (we live under
the laws of the
criminals) is the slogan
by the organization that
in addition to the
radio, television and
print campaign is very
active on the internet.
Some of the laws
promoted by the
Recuperemos la Paz are:
"don't carry cash",
"don't leave valuables
in your vehicle", "don't
leave your home alone",
"don't resist", etc.
