Woman Appointed As New
Security Minister
Janina del Vecchio, a
retired mathematics
professor and currently
a legislativ deputy, has
been appointed as the
new ministra de
Seguridad Pública,
replacing Fernando
Berrocal, who left the
post on Sunday.
Del Vecchio was made the
offer earlier this week,
but it wasn't until late
Thursday that the
appointment was made
official.
Del Vecchio led the
approval of the Tratado
de Libre Comercio (TLC)
- free trade agreement
with the United States
and Central America - in
a legislative
commission.
"The Ministerio de
Seguridad Pública needs
a leader, capable and
honest", said Costa
Rican president, Óscar
Arias Sánchez, while
making the Del Vecchio
announcement.
Del Vecchio is not a
stranger to the
political scene and in
the words of Arias, he
know her during his
first administration.
"She is an honest woman,
loyal, responsable, a
hard worker and makes
decisions, which is all
important", said Arias.
Del Vecchio is to assume
her post on April 25,
wanting to stay on in
the legislature a little
longer for the approval
of the TLC.
Vice-president and
minister de Justicia,
Laura Chinchilla, will
continue to fill as
interim minister until
Del Vecchio takes over,
saying that she will
work closely with Del
Vecchio to keep her
apprised of the work of
the ministry.
Del Vecchio, who today
celebrates her 62nd
birthday, was very
cautious when discussing
the Colombian rebel
group, the FARC, saying
only that she will be
meeting with former
minister Berrocal who
has "important
information".
Del Vecchio added "I
will wait the
information from
Colombia and then will
meet with the respective
entities", referring to
the delegation headed by
vice-president
Chinchilla, Costa Rica's
foreign minister, Bruno
Stagno and the Fiscal
General, Francisco
Dall'Anese, who will be
visiting Colombia for
more information on
alleged links between
Costa Rican politicians
and the Colombian rebel
group. |
