Felix Costing Nicaragua
Millions
Nicaraguans need as much
as 292 million dollars
in aid to restore the
damages caused by
Hurricane Felix in the
Autonomous Region of the
Northern Atlantic, local
authorities informed.
Native leader Brooklyn
Rivera handed in the
report to President
Daniel Ortega last
night, and affirmed that
the 198,069 people
affected need 18,000
metric tons of food in
the coming six months.
Rivera said that since
the hurricane pounded
the country on September
4, only 4,500 tons have
been received, with a
deficit of 13,500 tons,
equivalent to 16.5
million dollars.
Also, a total of 148
million dollars are
needed to rebuild
houses, churches, and
other facilities, while
the health sector calls
for another 40 million,
the native leader added.
In the meantime, the
amount required to
restore agricultural and
fishing production, as
well as to protect and
use the lumber of the
427,000 hectares of
forests pulled down by
Felix surpassed 85
million dollars, Rivera
explained..
President Ortega will
present the report at
the UN tomorrow, during
the 62nd period of
sessions of the UN
