Central American
Refinery with Foreign
Capital
Four companies from
Japan, India, Colombia,
and the US will take
part in the construction
of a Central American
refinery to process
80,000 barrels daily of
Mexican oil, the local
energy secretariat
informed on Monday.
Mexican energy officials
told El Financiero
specialized daily the
future refinery will be
funded by the companies
Ecopetrol (Colombia),
Itochu (Japan), Reliance
(India), and Valero (the
US).
Of the firms chosen to
participate in the
project of the
Central-American Energy
Integration Program (PIEM),
two already finished
related procedures,
through the signing of
confidentiality
agreements.
Steps are also being
made to obtain credits
from the Inter-American
Development Bank, and
the Central American
Economic Integration
Bank.
Feasibility studies will
be made in the coming 22
months, and once
functioning, the
refinery will cope with
36 percent of
consumption in the
region, allowing Central
American countries to
reduce imports by 40
percent, the source
