Ecuador, Colombia Bad Start in
2007
Ecuador started a new year
choking on Colombia glyphosate
fumigation along the northern
border, with bilateral relations
at rock bottom.
President-elect Rafael Correa
will be sworn in January 15 and
has promised to take Bogota to
international court and demand a
compensation for the damages
caused to that region.
Correa, visiting northern
bordering communities of the
province of Sucumbios,
highlighted that Colombia has
implemented a heavy-handed
policy as that kills not only
the coca plantations but also
legal crops.
Foreign Relations Minister
Francisco Carrion warned that
when that spraying ends there
would be no dialogue because
they will have mocked Ecuador.
Carrion stated he spoke on
behalf of the present government
of Alfredo Palacio and
forecasted greater deterioration
of bilateral relations.
