Parliament Sessions Cause
Criticism in Panama
The decision of President Martin
Torrijos to call an
extraordinary session of
Panama's National Assembly
(Parliament) to discuss delayed
projects, has increased tensions
between the government and the
Panamanian opposition.
Torrijos announced that the
Parliament will open its doors
on January 23 for ten days, to
analyze the reforms to be made
in the Penal and Civil Codes.
The president emphasized that
another project for discussion
would be controversial creation
of the Constitutional Guarantee
Courts, a proposal totally
rejected by the opposition.
Panamanian Party Deputy Jose
Blandon considers that it is an
irresponsibility of the
Executive to think that the
Assembly approves those changes
in only few days.
Legislator Mireya Lasso also
rejected the plan saying that
there was enough time to discuss
those projects.
According to the Parliament
agenda, the current period of
sessions conclude on Sunday, but
various proposals, such as
changes in the public
transportation, are still to be
approved.
