The Rush To Get Home
Some 800 officials of
the Policía de Tránsito
(traffic police) -
almost the entire force
- will be out on patrol
today and tomorrow as
vacationers start to
head home. The traffic
built up will start
today, however, Tránsito
expects massive traffic
congestion for tomorrow,
January 1 and the
following day, January
2.
Germán Marín, Policía de
Tránsito director, said
that Tránsito operations
and spot checks will
continue probably into
the weekend as many
vacationers may extend
their stay at the beach.
The major concern for
the Tránsito is drinking
and driving and
speeding, the two top
killers on the country's
roads.
Marín said that "Ticos"
just don't get that
driving under the
influence of alcohol can
be fatal. The statement
is backed up by the
number of tickets his
officials have issued
over the holidays and
the number of vehicles
confiscated driven by
drunk drivers.
The director said that
450 vehicles were
confiscated in the past
week alone. The vehicles
are sitting on the lots
of the Tránsito
delegations waiting for
their owners to pay the
fines, which cannot be
done until the
government workers get
back to work next week.
"At each of the spot
checks we have issued up
to 500 tickets a night
for a total of 8.000 in
a week for a variety of
different traffic
violations", said Marín.
