Trailer Loses Control,
Two Dead, Eight
Injured As a Result
Despite the efforts of
the Policía de Tránsito
(traffic police) to
reduce the number of
deaths from traffic
accidents, blood
continues to spill.
The latest spectacular
accident occurred
yesterday in the area
known as Cerro de la
Muerte (Death Peak) at
kilometre 70 of the
Interamericana Sur, when
a minivan full of people
slammed into a tractor
trailer. Two people were
killed in the accident,
eight more were taken to
hospital.
The two victims were
identified as 14 year
old Gualberto Fernández
Miranda and 34 year old
Roy Núñez Castro, the
driver of the minivan.
The group in the minivan
were headed to Pérez
Zeledon for the New
Year's while the tractor
trailer was headed in
the direction north.
The minivan was part of
a convoy of three
minivans headed south.
Acccording to initial
reports, the tractor
trailer loaded with wood
lost control when the
brakes failed and
crossed the median,
flipping over on its
side when slammed by the
minivan.
One of the injured,
seven year old Sabrina
Navarro Fernández was
airlifted to San José's
Hospital Nacional de
Niños (Children's
hospital). Several
others were taken to the
Hospital San Juan de
Díos in San José, while
others were takne to
Cartago hospital.
The family in the
minivan was from San
Carlos, northwest of San
José.

The Crus Roja (Red
Cross) and the Policía
de Tránsito report 16
deaths on the roads
between December 24 and
30. That number does not
count deaths occurred in
hospitals after being
removed from the scene
of an accident, as
officials do not follow
