Teachers To Strike On Thursday
The Asociación de Profesores de
Segunda Enseñanza (APSE) have
called a one day strike and
protest march for this Thursday,
May 3.
Teachers in San José, Alajuela,
Heredia and Cartago will gather
at 10:00am in the Parque Cental
in downtown San José and will
march towards the Ministerio de
Educación (MEP) - Education
ministry - building.
Jesús Vásquez, president of
APSE, said the strike is to
pressure the government into
fulfilling a number of promises
it made going back to 1997.
Among the promises includes the
limiting the number of students
in each classroom to 30, that
the process of naming teachers
for school year begins in May or
June and ready for November,
instead of leaving it to the
last minute as it has been the
custom, leaving many classrooms
without teachers come December,
the start of the school year.
The MEP vice-president, Silvia
Víquez, said yesterday she is
surprised at the union's call
for a strike, because two weeks
ago, following a sit down
session, the MEP accepted APSE's
agenda.
