Residents Say ICE Opened The
Floodgate to the Cachí Reservoir
The residents of Cachí say that
reason for low water levels at
the Cachía reservoir is due to
waste by the Instituto
Costarricense de Electricidad
(ICE), who say that the
institution opened the flood
gates to let the water out,
reducing water levels.
ICE emphatically denies the
claim.
Luis Brenes and Mauricio Irola,
two small businessmen in
Tucurrique, yesterday charged
that during the past week, ICE
during the night, opened the
flood gates to the dam to let
the water out.
"It is unbeleivable that this
resource is squandered
inexplicably while the higher
ups at the institution attribute
the power shortages we are all
suffering due to low water
levels", said Brenes, owner of
the Palenque Correque.
Brenes assures that they have
seen the torrent of water flow
into the Reventazón river. "My
business is located near the
riverbed and I can hear the
noise of the heavy water flow".
For his part, Irola, owner of a
local pizzeria, said that it has
been raining in and around Cachí
for the last couple of days "and
we can't explain why the water
is not accumulating in the dam".
Siding with Brenes and Irola, is
Vidal Quirós, who is a neighbour
of Tucurrique and operates a
tourism project on the
Reventazón.
Quirós said that last Monday, at
around 6:00pm, he saw a great
amount of water flow down the
river. "That only happens when
there is a lot of water in the
Cachí and ICE opens the
floodgates".
However, Salvador López, of the
Centro de Control de Energía del
ICE, denies the charges saying
they have not spilled out drop
of water from the dam.
López assures that no one has
let any water out of the dam.
