Salvadoran Funes for Stronger Links with
Venezuela
San Salvador - President-elect of El
Salvador, Mauricio Funes, announced on
Friday his decision to strengthen relations
with Venezuela, which have been so far at
the level of charge d'' affaires.
During an interview for Channel Two of
Telecorporacion Salvadorena, Funes gave
details of his visit this week to Caracas
and his five-hour meeting with President
Hugo Chavez. "I will normalize this thaw in
relations maintained so far by President
Antonio Saca, who has failed to accept
credentials of any official accredited as
ambassador," said Funes.
He also announced the likelihood of
Venezuela doubling its oil supply to El
Salvador from 5,000 to 10,000 barrels a day.
Issues discussed with Chavez included the
creation of a bilateral committee to broaden
cooperation in trade, health, agriculture
and other sectors, according to Funes.
He also said to be working with governments
of Venezuela and Brazil to open a technology
transfer office in San Salvador.
Funes, the candidate of the Farabundo Marti
National Liberation Front, won the
presidency in elections on March 15, beating
candidate of the Nationalist Republican
Alliance, Rodrigo Avila.
In his TV broadcast interview, the
president-elect said he would make his
Cabinet public a few days before his
inauguration, slated for June 1st. |
