The failure of a US frigate to provide Costa
Rican health authorities with adequate
information of its crew due to the AH1N1
flu, forced Costa Rican authorities to deny
the ship's crew landing in the port of
Golfito, in the southern zone.
The medical chief of the USS Gary agreed to
provide Costa Rican health officials a
declaration of the health of the crew,
however, Costa Rican officials required more
detailed information on each member of the
crew.
The stalemate forced the US ship to refuel
and leave port the next day, leaving area
residents disappointed, as they are
accustomed to receiving the US ships and
their income to local commerce and the help
in social programs.
The USS Gary was in Golfito to help repair a
local school, provide training to students
of the Costa Rican coastguard and deliver
free hygiene items to the local nursing
home, as well as other social work.
