For President
Former presidential candidate for the
Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN), now with
the newly formed, Alianza Patriótica (AP)
party, has refused to talk about the
possibility of running against his brother,
former San Jose mayor, Johnny Araya, for the
presidential chair in 2010, if brother
Johnny should get the party nod.
Rolando told the press that he will talk
about that "when it happens".
The AP party last Sunday concluded a
national assembly, but has yet to announce a
candidate, while the PLN will be holding its
convention on June 7 to nominate a
candidate, between Johnny Araya, Laura
Chinchilla and Fernando Berrocal.
Rolando failed to get the PLN party
leadership nomination in 1993, running again
in 2002, losing the presidential elections
to Abel Pacheco.
Rolanod Araya served as legislator,
executive of the municipality of San José
and ministro de Obras Publicas y Transportes
(MOPT) in the Luis Alberto Monge
administration of 1982 to 1986, in addition
to being the secretary general of the PLN
party. President Monge, who is a founding
members of the PLN party, is Rolando and
Johnny's uncle.
Johnny Araya has been mayor of San José
since 1998, stepping down earlier this year
to run for the PLN party leadership. |
