Former President Rodríguez Once Again With Preventive Measures

Once again former Costa Rican president, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, faces preventive measures, this time related to the PWS case, where he is alleged to have received payments from the British reinsurer.

Rodríguez, at the request of the Fiscalía (prosecutor), was ordered by a court to surrender his passport, sign in at the Fiscalía once a month, have a permanent residence and not leave the country.

The judge felt that there existed the possibility of flight while the Fiscalía continues its investigation into the allegations in the PWS case.

Rodríguez lawyer, Rafael Gairaud, immediately filed an appeal against the preventive measures, saying that his client has not intention of fleeing the country.

The Fiscalía alleges that Rodríguez received payment from PWS in the amount of us$706.135, which the former president refutes.

PWS provided the state insurer, the Instituto Nacional de Seguros (INS) with reinsurance policies, means by which an insurance company can protect itself with other insurance companies against the risk of losses.

Former president Rodríguez is also alleged to have received payment in the Alcatel-ICE case. After spending a period in jail and house arrest as part of the preventive measures in that case, the former president had all restrictions removed and the Fiscalía to present charges or conclude its investigation.
