EU-G Rio Oppose Coercive Measures
Prague - The Joint Declaration of the
14th Ministerial Conference of the European
Union and the Group of Rio will reaffirm
their opposition to unilateral coercive
measures in violation of international law.
At the end of a two-day meeting of high
ranking officials from the 25 European
countries and the group of Latin America and
the Caribbean (GRio), Prensa Latina heard
some details of the final text expected to
be adopted tomorrow in Prague.
Though the US economic blockade imposed on
Cuba for nearly 50 years is not mentioned
explicitly, references in this direction,
such as the rejection of all forms of
protectionism of rich countries, are put
forward.
Another significant aspect indicates the
need to change production and consumption
patterns, as well as the need to have access
to sustainable energy sources for
development, including the UN Millennium
Goals.
Regarding the world economic and financial
crisis, the EU and the GRio considered
relevant discussions held at the G20 Summit
and other meetings, including the top level
UN Conference on the issue.
EU Foreign ministers or their
representatives and the 23 members of GRio
are scheduled to hold two work sessions
tomorrow focused mainly on the international
economic scene, renewable energy and climate
change.
Discussions among the EU Troika with Chile,
Mexico, Central America and MERCOSUR are
expected on Thursday. |
