Araya Accuses
President Arias Of Raising Funds For
Chinchilla
Former mayor of San Jose, Johnny Araya, who
is seeking the Partido Liberacion Nacional (PLN)
party nomintation, assures that he has
evidence that Costa Rican president, Oscar
Arias, has been collecting funds to finance
the leadership campaign of Laura Chinchilla.
Araya says he has received information that
Arias has been making calls to solicit
donations to the Chinchilla, who was his
vice-president until last October, when she
stepped down to seek out the PLN party
nomination.
The candidate assures that the information
is from reliable sources and calls on the
government and the presidency to maintain
its distance from the internal struggles of
the party.
"The government should not be involved in
this matter", said Araya.
Araya has no hesitation to accuse Oscar
Arias to be fully involved in the Chinchilla
campaign.
"I spoke to him about a month ago and did
not think he was involved, but now I do",
said Araya.
The PLN party will be holding its leadership
convention on June 7 and the San Jose mayor,
who is on temporary leave, has asked the
government to stop a publicity campaign
about the government's achievements, which
according to Araya is a dirty tactic to
relate to the public Chinchilla's
involvement in those achievements.
Araya feels that the government's publicity
campaign confuses people and to his
detriment and said he would appeal to the
Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE) -
elections tribunal - to evaluate the actions
of the president.
President Arias has been a staunch supporter
of Chinchilla and was asked by the elections
tribunal last year to tone down his position
after commenting that he would like to see a
woman follow his term.
