Uruguayans Want Cuban Five Free

Montevideo -  The largest march in Uruguay for the release of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unfairly imprisoned in the United States will be held here Monday, coinciding with a world campaign to support that cause.

The rally will start at 19:00, local time, in front of the Municipal Council of Montevideo, and move along 18 de Julio Avenue, the most densely populated street, to the Libertad Square.

Several speakers will demand the freedom of Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Gerardo Labanino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez.

The Five, as they are universally known, have been serving harsh sentences in that northern country since September 1998.

Their real crime was gathering information about terrorist plots by anti-Cuban organizations in Miami, Florida, in an effort to prevent the deaths of Cuban and even US citizens.

The demonstration also coincides with an event organized in Havana by the island's Young Communist League, in which Uruguayan delegates will publish a declaration demanding the release of those Cuban patriots. The letter will be read here in the activity.

The Coordinating Committee for Support to the Cuban Revolution, the Association of former Political Prisoners and that of Relatives of Uruguayan scholarship holders in Cuba, and the Federation of University Students are also participating in the preparation of the rally.

The Uruguay-Cuba Friendship Culture House, the Bolivarian Continental Coordinator, and influential federations of Cooperatives of Housing for Mutual Support are among other groups involved in the effort.
