American Economic System (SELA)) Jose Rivera
stressed that integration is the best
solution for development in the region.
I think we have not given regional
integration the speed and necessary urgency
it requires, Rivera stated in an interview
with Prensa Latina at the institute
headquarters.
We have lacked implementation of these
efforts, and should do so, since integration
is the best solution for development in
Latin America and the Caribbean, he added.
Rivera put forward that solidarity is a main
requisite for integration and that we need
more solidarity to better consolidate
integration.
He recalled that while Europeans signed the
Rome Treaty in 1957, the first Montevideo
Treaty was signed in 1960, with the
intention to boost Latin American regional
integration. We can see where Europe is now
and that we still have a long way to go,
though he did recognize progress on the
issue of tariff preferences.
Rivera stressed the need to tackle this
challenge as soon as possible, particularly
because of the deep international economic
crisis. |
