Guatemalan Closing Indigenous Gap

Guatemala -  The Guatemalan government is working to close the gap of marginalizalition the country has generated for indigenous peoples, affirmed vice president Rafael Espada. The ad interim president Espada opened the 32nd Meeting of the Direction Council of the Fund for Development of the Indigenous People in Latin America and the Caribbean.

He referred to the social programs that aim to cover the necessities of the poorest communities, which are also autochthonous.

The forum gathers representatives of different Latin American and Caribbean ethnic groups, who prepare proposals of political inclusion and list their demands to their respective governments.

Meeting at the Flags Salon of the National Culture Palace, the delegates are debating and coordinating the defense of their rights and interests, and participate in the preparation of plans, programs and projects in the region.

To make effective development with identity, active participation is necessary of all those who work in favor of the original peoples, he said.

Created in 1992, this Fund is the only multilateral institution of international cooperation specialized in promotion of self development and recognition of the rights of native communities, according to sources consulted.

Member nations are Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, as well as three extra-regional countries: Belgium, Spain and Portugal.
