Managua - Cuban ophthalmologists of
the Operation Miracle mission in Nicaragua
have completed over 50,000 eye surgeries,
coordinator Doctor Mercedes Argote said. She
told Prensa Latina that between the Sandino
City's Clinic and those in the cities of
Bluefields and Puerto Cabezas, 50,113 eye
surgeries were performed.
Fifty Cuban collaborators that include
surgeons, physicians, nurses, economic
technicians and engineers of the System of
Electro Medicine shape the three brigades
that are shedding a ray of hope on many
Nicaraguans, she informed.
The surgeries include pterigium, cataracts,
glaucoma, chalazion and lachrymal glands,
and others.
The specialist expressed satisfaction with
the effort and will continue returning sight
to many Nicaraguans, some who had never seen
the light of day.
We are pleased with the level of
satisfaction in our professionals and their
patients, most from low income sectors of
the country, she added.
Here in Sandino City, she added, we assisted
patients who had gone years with poor
vision, including professional, as a
maxillofacial specialist, who had his sight
impaired and on whom we performed surgery.
She explained that one association for the
blind lost 15 members, who after surgical
treatment recovered sight and returned to
society.
She explained that this project is part of
the Bolivarian Alternative for the peoples
of our America (ALBA) and is offered
completely free, regardless of political
stances, beliefs, skin color or social
condition of the patients.
For the majority of Nicaraguans, these
treatments in normal health services are
unaffordable, since a cataract operation
costs about $2,000 and one of pterigium
costs $600. |
