Homeless Numbers Alarming in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires - Nearly 2,000 people are homeless in Buenos Aires, where a harmful policy of dumping people on the streets, applied by the government of that city, has doubled homeless numbers, Pagina 12 local paper denounced Monday.

The "alarming increase" in homeless was registered during 2008, at the time the drastic and silent measure began to be applied, the local paper reported.

Same source recalled Buenos Aires Cabinet Chief Horacio Rodriguez affirmed at the beginning of current year people are slowly becoming homeless in silence.

Growing numbers of people sleep in the streets each day, as Rodriguez ironically predicted, government statistics reveal 1,950 people are in that situation.

Pagina 12 reports near 22,000 people have already lost or are in danger of loosing their houses.

The causes of the problem are many, all evident, like the absence of a policy addressed to reduce homelessness over the longer term, it adds.
