Government Calls For Calm After Earthquakes
Caracas - The
Venezuelan government called on Monday the
public to be calm after moderate earthquakes
hit the central coast region of the country.
Jesse Chacon, official from Venezuelan
Science, Technology and Intermediates
Industries, requested people to pay
attention to possible replicas and asked
them to develop a seismic culture due to the
geologic conditions of the country.
An earthquake of 5.4 Richter scales,
occurring at 4:40 a.m. local time (0920 GMT)
Monday with its epicenter 14 km to Los
Teques, suburbs of Caracas, did not leave
victims or damage.
After the first earthquake, there were felt
four replicas of lower magnitude, 4.0, 3.1,
2.9 and 4.6 degrees respectively.
The earthquakes were also felt in the
capital and the states of Miranda, Aragua,
Carabobo and Vargas.
Chacon said through national TV and radio
that the first earthquake was superficial
with the depth lower to 10 km.
He said Venezuela has the most modern
systems in Latin America to measure
earthquake at real time.
