Panama Candidates for Economic Reforms
Panama - Candidates
running for Panama's presidency in May
elections have prioritized economic issues
in their agendas to attract potential
voters.
Programs on security, education, public
health, transportation and housing are
complemented by recommendations on taxes and
management of public finance, in an effort
to win the hearts and votes of Panamanians.
The agenda of Ricardo Martinelli, the
presidential candidate for the opposition
Alliance for Change, proposes the
elimination of government subsidies to basic
services such as electricity.
He also recommended a tax reform and
committed himself to reducing prices of the
family shopping basket, a major concern for
Panamanians, although he did not elaborate
on how he will implement those measures.
For her part, the candidate for the
Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD),
Balbina Herrera, pointed out that the impact
of the suggested changes must be taken into
consideration.
Herrera noted that setbacks in the country's
management as a result of budget cuts must
be prevented. She recommended more support
for national producers to reduce high food
prices.
Panamanians will elect the president and the
vice president, deputies to the National
Assembly and the Central American
Parliament, mayors and representatives in
the May elections. |
