Emigrants to Vote in Ecuadorian Elections
A mission of Ecuador's National Election
Council will meet in Madrid with consuls of
that South American country in European
cities to coordinate the participation of
Ecuadorian migrants in the April 26 general
elections, it was reported here.
The issue will be discussed at a meeting
scheduled for next week in Madrid, according
to sources from the Ecuadorian Embassy.
Ecuadorian law allows citizens living abroad
and registered in the electoral roll to vote
for the president and the vice president, 15
national deputies and two deputies for each
of the three overseas constituencies
(Europe, North America and Latin America).
In Ecuador, voting is compulsory for
citizens residing in the country, but it is
a voluntary decision for those living
abroad.
According to the Ecuadorian Embassy in
Madrid, 11,340 Ecuadorians have registered
in Spain, so voting stations will be
available in each of consular jurisdiction
(Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Murcia, Malaga
or Palma de Mallorca). |
