Colombian Guerrilla Chief Killed in Action

Bogota - Javier Galvis Flores (Mauricio), a member of the Central Command of the National Liberation Movement (ELN), was killed in action by the National Police, according to sources from that corps.

The source added that the clash occurred in the rural zone of the municipality of Libano, in the central-western department of Tolima.

Mauricio's death was confirmed by Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos shortly before departing for Peru on Friday.

He said the clash in which Mauricio was killed was part of a series of ongoing operations by the National Police against the Bolshevik front of the ELN headed by the late guerrilla chief.

According to Santos, four other insurgent leaders had been killed earlier.

Recently, President Alvaro Uribe offered a 150,000-dollar reward to whoever provided information about Mauricio's whereabouts.
