Chilean Opposition
Lawmaker Sworn In
As President of Lower House
Santiago - Rodrigo
Alvarez, an opposition legislator, was
elected on Wednesday president of Chilean
Chamber of Deputies.
Alvarez's victory, which thanks to a
political deal between the opposition
Independent Democratic Union, and the ruling
party, is important to the opposition,
because it is the first time since 1990 that
a deputy from the opposition elected
president of the lower chamber.
Alvarez thanked his friends from the ruling
party that "they fulfilled a political
agreement in order to bring stability and
tranquility to this institution."
Alvarez obtained 86 votes, defeating his two
contenders.
