Travelling from the east of the Sabana park,
from the Gimnasio Nacional to the Escazu
bridge can take almost an hour these days as
the the final asphalting of the section of
the autopista Prospero Fernández began this
week and will continue for the next two
weeks.
A word of advice, stay away from the area,
especially between 7am and 9pm, unless you
really have to be there.
The section of road is part of the San Jose
- Caldera highway that is under
construction. The Sabana - Escazu is the
first section that will be completed in the
coming weeks, as work crews lay the final
asphalt on the Sabana - circunvalación and
the continue working on the Escazu bridge
and then the final coat from the Escazu
bridge to the toll booths.
The road builder, Autopistas del Sol,
expects to have the entire section between
La Sabana and Santa Ana finished by not
later than May, when it will start charging
tolls.
Some of the improvements to the road, in
addition of the widening from four to six
lanes (between Sabana and Multiplaza and the
continues on four lanes to Santa Ana) are
bus bays, overhead passes for traffic and
new on and off ramps at the circunvalación
and Escazu intersections.
If you have to travel through the area, be
armed with patience and a tank full of gas.
