Water Rationing Cause of Lack Of Investments

The high demand for potable water during the
summer or dry season means that some 80.000
in some seven areas of San José will have to
live through rationing, according to Ricardo
Sancho, president of the Acueductos y
Alcantarillados (AyA) - water and sewer
utility.
The areas that will be affected by the
rationing are Santa Ana, Ciudad Colón,
Escazú, Aserrí, Alajuelita, Desamparados and
Coronado.
Sancho blames the shortage of the vital
fluid to those who insist on watering their
gardens during the dry and hot months of
January to May.
However, in reality, the solution to the
problem is not only to stop watering gardens
and turning off the taps more often, but,
rather a serious investment by the AyA.
The mayors of the affected communities argue
that the lack of sufficient water reservoirs
and pumps and replacing old water mains,
reducing the number of breaks and leaks that
are common in every community.
The community leaders are adamant that the
lack of sufficient water storage tanks is
the cause of the shortages that have been
increasing over the last three years.
Sancho has promised to invest in
infrastructure, saying that us$18 million
dollars along will go to improve water
distribution in Santa Ana, Escazú and Ciudad
Colón. The AyA president added that Coronado
will get new water pipes as part of the
improvements.
However, some go as much as 23 hours without
water in some communities in Santa Ana and
Cuidad Colón, says the mayor of the Santa
Ana, Gerardo Oviedo.
Many families in the affected communities
have to invest in bottled water, in addition
to paying the water bill, which water or
not, seems to come every month.
